THE PROCEDURE: Harvesting of fat cells for cosmetic stem cell improvement. Now available in South Florida.
Science Fiction Meets Modern-day Science
The use of adipocyte-derived stem cells and regenerative medicine in the United States is just beginning with this FDA-compliant protocol that has finally arrived in South Florida via Medical Director Dr. Harold Bafitis and IntelliCell BioSciences of Palm Beach, a division of IntelliCell BioSciences Inc.
WHAT IS STEM CELL THERAPY AND REGENERATIVE MEDICINE?
Stem cells are cells that have the ability to change into other cells of the body (pluripotential cells). Most stem cells do NOT come from embryos or bone marrow; they come from your own fat cells (adipocytes). These adipose-derived stem cells from your own body can restore function by enabling the body to repair, replace, and regenerate damaged, aging, or diseased cells, tissues and organs. This has been proven clinically in Europe, India, and Japan where adipose-derived stem cells are being used.
HOW IS DR. BAFITIS INVOLVED IN THIS EXCITING FIELD?
Dr. Bafitis has been chosen as Medical Director for IntelliCell Biosciences of Palm Beach, Inc., because of his experience. Bafitis has been utilizing fat transfer in reconstruction for more than 10 years. He has led national meetings in regard to fat transfer, and holds regular teaching classes for other plastic surgeons in awake liposculpture and specifically the jet lavage system. Dr. Bafitis has embraced this new field of regenerative medicine and realizes his work as well as the work of other physicians, with adipocyte-derived stem cells will literally provide the foundation for evidence-based protocols for stem cell therapy in the United States.
HOW ARE STEM CELLS HARVESTED?
The fat-derived stem cells to which we are referring are harvested from your own body. Double Board Certified plastic surgeon Dr. Harold Bafitis, utilizing the latest technique to provide the most viable fat cells, the “jet lavage liposuction system” harvests these cells. This technique allows you to be fully awake without any pain, and produces the most fat cells for the best yield of stem cells. You can choose to have oral sedation or even IV sedation, but most patients prefer minimal to no sedation. Some patients prefer to have areas of their body, i.e. abdomen, hip rolls, and saddle bags, liposculpted at the same time they would be donating some of their fat cells “adipocytes” for stem cell harvest and same-day use.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE STEM CELLS ARE HARVESTED?
Dr. Bafitis and his staff prepare the fat for immediate stem cell separation. IntelliCell BioSciences of Palm Beach picks up the adipocytes at the time of harvest and it is taken to their medical processing center. The separation of the stromal vascular fraction from the adipose tissue is performed within an hour. The stromal vascular fraction, which has adult stem cells, pre-adipocytes, fibroblasts, and growth factors, will be transported back to Dr. Bafitis, within 1-1/2 to 2 hours with a detailed report on the viability and number of stem cells produced.
WHAT CONDITIONS HAVE BEEN TREATED BY ADIPOSE-DERIVED STEM CELLS?
The United States has been slightly behind in the clinical use of stem cells, but veterinarians have been using equine stem cells derived from fat to correct aging or damaged tendons in horses for over seven years with amazing results! In humans, stem cells have been utilized as follows in the United States:
a. Dermal injections for dermal regeneration with improved lines and wrinkles.
b. Dermal injections for acne scars.
c. Dermal injections for burns and ulcerated wounds.
d. Addition of stem cells to harvested fat for greater take, regeneration, and volumizing of the face and body.
e. These cells have also been successfully utilized in the knee, elbow, and hands in terms of injections for arthritis.
f. Knee injections for cartilage repair or improvement for cartilage loss/ damage.
There are physicians who have also utilized stem cells via IV drip for osteoarthritis and improvement in pain from inoperable joint/spine disease.
